Hound Heaven

At one point, Cope the hound was a shelter dog who had been here longer than all of the others. He didn't do great in small spaces, bayed that loud hound bay at all of the shelter visitors, and loved to RUN! Despite all of these things, Cope was a very sweet dog who just needed a little extra attention.

If you have ever been to our shelter you know, it isn't quite walking distance from any location. So when we saw a gentleman arriving to our shelter by foot, we were a little perplexed. He explained he was in town from Oregon on work, driving a long-haul truck (that wouldn't fit up our narrow little hill). He had seen Cope on our website, and was interested in him! His family wouldn't be in town for another few days, he was just going to meet Cope to see if it was worth his family meeting him too. It must have been love at first sight, because he left that day with Cope. Cope made the long drive back to Oregon with his hopeful new owner. We were told he rode in the truck like a champ for many hours! We let him know if it didn't work out, we would take him back when he returned back into town later that week.

We weren't sure if it would work out. The new family lived on a few acres but had no fencing (Cope, a true hound, loves to follow his nose!) The neighbors also owned another large breed dog and we had no idea if Cope would take well to him. We kept our fingers crossed and truly hoped for the best. The next day we received a call. Cope ran for hours on their unfenced property, came right back when called.. played wonderfully with the new neighbor dog, and when it was time for bed settled right down in his new home! We cried happy tears.

Sometimes all it takes is a little love for a shelter dog to really shine. Cope is pictured above on a raft trip down the Grande Ronde River, clearly in HOUND HEAVEN! We could not be any happier that Cope found the perfect home.
